The Devastating Draw of Netflix’s Adolescence
The second event in The Power of Drama: Why Do We Watch What We Watch? Fall 2025 Community Learning Series
In only four episodes, Adolescence grips the viewer with its horrifying, heartbreaking story of toxic masculinity, murder, identity, cyberbullying, and parenting. Join BGSP faculty for a discussion of this quietly devastating show and the many reasons it stays with viewers long after the final credits.
Discussion Leaders
Roxana Albut Sahlean, M.Ed., LMHC is a psychotherapist in private practice in Brookline and an adjunct faculty member in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis. Born in the U.S. and raised in Romania, China and Hungary, she brings a layered cultural background to her clinical and teaching work, with sensitivity to themes of identity, displacement, and resilience. With over 25 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and adults in clinical, educational, and residential settings, her work is grounded in psychoanalytic sensibility and shaped by a long-held interest in how mind, body, and culture interact in the healing process. Trained in Qigong, Kripalu yoga and meditation, she enjoys integrating these practices into her work as pathways to greater awareness and emotional regulation. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at Lesley University, where her research explores relational pedagogy in the training of future psychotherapists.
William Sharp, Psya.D. is a clinician working with adolescents in private practice. He teaches graduate-level courses in counseling, training the next generation of therapists. His unique perspective draws from both clinical expertise and an appreciation for how dramatic arts can illuminate the universal themes of the adolescent experience. As a result, he has led and organized many film discussions at BGSP and Northeastern University.
Please note that the series will not be shown during the event. We strongly encourage you to do so ahead of time, as it will allow for deeper conversations and understanding during the event.
